Starter For 1986 528E BMW - replacement is a b*tch

Bentley makes it sound soooo easy, doesn't it? I tried it on my old '86 528e
last year. I got everything apart except for the upper bellhousing nut. I
was able to reach the nut with a 3/8" socket with 10" extension, but it was
just loose enough that it would start to strip the nut. I had to give up,
reassemble it, and take it down to my mechanic. . .

which turned out to be a good idea as it was the flywheel that needed
replacement. Besides, I began to wonder how I would be able to maneuver the
800-lb. starter into position while working in such a small space.

I had put the front of the car up on jack stands. That allowed me reasonable
access to the lower bellhousing nut. Which left me with "only" the upper
bellhousing nut. I've heard of chiseling the upper nut, and then replacing it
when reassembling.

Good luck,
