This is too easy and too bizarre an answer, but have him make sure his fan
shroud is well attached to the radiator, and that the "clips" that hold the
radiator in place haven't broken. On my E34 I heard a similar noise,
checked the attachment of the shroud to the radiator, never thought to check
the radiator mounts themselves, which had broken. I let it go, took the car
up to speed, radiator shifted back directly into the fan blades=instant
destruction of both the radiator and the fan, and I got some nice dents in
my hood from flying pieces of fan blade. Might be worth a look.
