87 325iS AC

The AC on my 1987 325iS does not work. Is there a particular component that
usually causes problems with this system, or what? I am trying to diagnose
and correct this problem myself. The dealer told me that it could cost over
1500 to fix (at most).
I just wanted to know where to start. I have already refilled the system,
and there are no apparent leaks. Is it the compressor, condenser, etc.
