I went to the BMW dealership in the area (Knauz in
Lake Bluff, Illinois) and talked to a "Service
Advisor" who seemed even less than clueless. No way
I'm giving that "advisor" a car to screw with...I
_do_ have options, ya know...
Being the cheap, yet creative bastard that I am, I'm
trying the following:
I went to the Home Depot this afternoon, and purchased
some Schedule 40 pipe, along with appropriate
glue/solvents. I bought a 1" coupling, and a 3/4"
coupling, but later found the one piece I bought for
the 3/4" actually fit perfectly into the remaining
outlet space, and had a 1" molded end which fit the
radiator hose perfectly.
I used a Dremel tool to rough up the surfaces prior to
joining. Total cost under $5.00. It _seems_ that it
works. However, when I refilled the radiator, I then
found that there is a crack (likely related to the
other problem) which starts where the top of the
outlet joins the plastic "top" of the radiator (on the
side, though). This crack is about 1/2 an inch long,
ending just under the mount for the fan shroud.
Not willing to admit defeat, I got out the JB Weld,
drilled the end of the crack, and opened up the rest
of the crack with the Dremel and a drill bit, so I
could really get the JB Weld in there. I'm letting it
cure tonight, and tomorrow evening I'll try to refill,
connect the system, etc.
I'll report on the results. If it works, it could
save a bunch-o-money! (If not, it won't be the first
time I made a fool of myself on the Internet!)
