Re the E34 cars: They are great! Mine is 1990 535ia,
even with the automatic the car is beautiful to drive. I'm
approaching 184,000 miles, I've done the radiator, front suspension,
driveshaft, had some problem with front end shimmy (apparently this model
does have some "sensitivity" there--wheel and tire balance are critical).
I've never had the head off, had/have a little leakage from trans when
parked on an incline, brake master cylinder leaked for a while, then quit
leaking. Beyond that, the usual maintenance items--brakes etc. I have not
maintained it properly, if I had a couple of these problems could probably
have been eliminated. I'm on the original springs and shocks all around.
(Obviously you don't want to hold this up to the kid as a good example.)
All in all an absolutely great car. Oh, I'm in the desert, and I got
premature fade on some horizontal surfaces. I've read that several BMW
models have a similar weak spot in the paint. I would not be afraid to buy
that car. How many miles on it? If you don't want it, let me know where it
is.
