Motronic water damage

I've just ordered a rebuilt Motronic control box because mine has suffered 
some water damage.  The car is an 88 325i convertible.  Looking at the way 
the Motronic box is built and mounted, it looks like it will retain any 
water that manages to seep in rather than allowing it to drain.  Is water 
damage a common problem?  If so, is there a place on the web with hints as 
to how to prevent it from happening again?
