I had a similar problem.  Sometimes would not start at all when warm.

Dealer said "thermostat" was faulty, although
the gauge always read exactly OK.  The receipt reads =

"Temperature time switch (sensor)".  I don't know what
this is but it worked!.  Only cost GBP18 plus GBP27 labour.
