Bad Air temp sensor ?

Folks,

(88 325 is)
1) I am getting intermittent engine check light. The engine check light 
code is 1224 which means air temp sensor is faulty. How do I find if it is 
just a wiring issue or the air sensor is faulty. How do I replace one?

2) How do I know when to replace ignition wires, cap and rotor? The car has 
124K. Probably these are original wires. Obviously no one wants to replace 
them at a cost of $230 if not required.
