The story I heard ....
The engines in question suffer from are claimed to suffer from the low sulphur
content of North Sea crude derived petrols. I think some selective corrosion of
one of the phases in the alloy took place with the result that the casings
became porous!.
BMW were replacing engines AND charging unless you complained. The replacement
blocks also suffered from the same problem until the alloy spec was changed. So
be wary even if replaced unless the new block is of the new alloy.
