<E28> 535is hesitation under heavy throttle

I have a 1987 535is w/87k and auto tranny with the adjustable tranny 
switch.
The car seemed to inherit a strange problem this morning. Under heavy 
throttle, as the tranny is changing gears from 1st into 2nd, the engine 
cuts out for a second.

Strangely though, under normal driving, the tranny shifts smoothly and 
the there is no engine hesitation.

Anyone experience this with their E28?.
