E34 Touring Tailgate Window

Has anyone ever replaced the lifting struts for the tailgate window?  
According to the Bentley manual, they are concealed inside the roof, and 
require a special tool to remove them.

The instructions and illustrations in the Bentley manual aren't very good, 
so I'd appreciate it if someone can share what needs to be done.

This may be a job for a shop.  :-(
