E34 Doesn't want to stop running...

Last night, when my wife a I went to dinner, I parked my 1989 535i
and  turned off the car. The dash lights went off for a split second and
then went on again, and the engine kept running. At this point, the key
is out of the ignition, and the car is running and functioning as if the
key was in the "run" position. I reinserted the key, turned to the run
position and turned it off again. This time it shut off as normal. It
happened again later in the evening, but there was a 5 to 8 second delay
before the lights(oil press., battery, brake, the usual start-up warning
lights) came back on. 
  Sounds like the ignition switch to me, but I curious if anyone else
has experienced this. Thanks in advance for response and thank you
