M20 perf

I've noticed early M20 engine have a "return" pipe which partitaly
collects exhaust gases and returns it back 2 air intake
now, with these gases being extremely hot, would that not decrease
performace?	is it possible to illiminate thse return pipes?
I know they're uses 2 control emmissions, anything else?
