The Primordial Lust for Power (E-36 Owners)

I have done all the research that I can think of, gone to many an Autocross
to talk to other drivers, talked to many aftermarket companies (Korman,
Turner, Bekkers, etc...) and still can't come up with a clear concensus on
what will work to bring up the horsepower/torque figures of the E-36/ODB2
BMW line.

So, I am looking for opinions from the butt-dyno.

CAM: Does anyone have experience with cam changes on the ODB2/E-36 that
show an appreciable, rear wheel torque/horsepower gain?

CHIP: Everyone I talk to has an opinion, but no two are alike.

Does anyone know of anyone who has had a satisfactory experience,
transplanting either a 3.5 litre six cylinder or 4.0+ litre eight cylinder
motor into the ODB2/E-36?

Thanks in advance for your input and comments.
