RE : 2002 heater
Hello ,
Regarding the 2002 heater, think long and hard about how
necessary heat and defrosting might be in your climate and driving time
in the car before "repairing" the system.
Repairing a 2002 heater is legendary among BMW enthusiasts as
the most undesirable of undertakings. Personal labor time and
aggravation is extreme (and really requires two people for properly
setting cable in the heater valve), professional labor time is expensive,
and replacement parts are priced relatively high even if purchased used.
Wearing warm gloves and scarf in cold weather and simply
opening the door's triangle side window for defrosting on rainy warmer
days were my solutions for 16 years even when driving several highway
winter hours below 32 degrees. Other drivers plug a 12 volt computer
fan into the cigarette lighter and place the small fan just under the
windshield above the instrument panel for defrosting.
De-icing is not possible, though.
These solutions are much easier and far less expensive than an
actual repair
of any part within the system.
This advice is based upon personal experience as well as
conventional wisdom. My heater box now is personally and optionally
rebuilt during an engine upgrade with replacement heater core and a new
heater valve but the time, effort, and used parts expense might not
justify the benefit.
