OBC - but not as I know it! Fixed, here's some minor points

Many thanks to several people who emailed
me about fixing the dim OBD (1989 325i, problem detailed in
Volume 09 : Number 1262)

The faq advice at http://cbsgi1.bu.edu/bmw/obc.html was invaluable.

I followed the advice of Steve Fox in that faq and here's how it went
for me.

To replace the OBC backlight module:
- - There was no need to undo the bottom two facia screws (which are
tricky to get at).
They don't even have to be loosened because there is enough flexing in
the facia
to allow the panel to be pulled out but be very careful no to overdo
it and crack
  the thing.
- - Only ONE OBC fixing screw has to be removed. The top right one
(looking at the front
  of the OBC.
- - The screw is a little tricky to replace as the facia has to be bent
outwards
quite a distance. I filed the head of the screw into a square shape.
This made
it much easier to hold and get the thing started and tightened.

I called BMW dealer and they said I could buy just the replacment lamps
for
1 ukp each. However when I actually turned up at the parts counter, no
one
knew anything about it and said I'd need the complete backlight housing
(cost 16 ukp ~ $26). Not much choice so that's what I bought. Everything
went back together very easily and my OBC shines again.

The whole job took only about 20 mins as Steve said! Thanks all.
