my girlfriend bought a 1995 540ia 2 years ago and loves her car, though the
engine has not been replaced - drag....

a 1997 (there are no 1996 model year cars!!!) will cost you wayyyyyyyy more
than your budget - not even a high mileage 1997 can be had for less than
$35K in a 6 speed.  stick with a 1995 6 speed with high mileage (or a 1994
- - if you could find a 6 speed at all!!!!?) and it will still cost a pretty
penny - all of $30k.  these cars are a gas!
