E38 740i recall notice

Just curious, but I received a recall notice for my '95 740i which indicates
that an engine management chip must be replaced...stating that some vehicles
have had higher than expected nitrogen oxide emissions...  BMW found that
the O2 sensors had excessive deposits....which caused a lean shift of the
air/fuel mix.
Is there any connection between this and the owners that have reported
having to replace Catalytic converters early?
