Help - 525 Died - TRANS PROGRAM

OK, on the way to dinner tonight my '92 525 w/automatic tranny died.  The
dash read "TRANS PROGRAM"

Looking at the manual, I should have been able to limp home in default mode
BUT the engine died and refused to start.  I had it towed to the dealership
while I got my family back home, jumped in the 635 and went on to dinner.

My question is, has this happened to anyone else?  I am pretty much
convinced I will need a new tranny computer but wonder if something else
went out too.

Ideas?
