Paint Chips

So I have owned my car for about 5 months now.  The paint on the hood is
chipped to hell from all the open top trucks hauling dirt and sand on my
way to work.  How much would it be to have the hood repainted?  Is there
a good way to protect again this (don't tell me not to drive behind
them), I have seen a 3M adhesive plastic that covers the lower part of
the hood.  Does anyone use this?  I don't want a bra, can't stand the
way they look.
