[e36] Is my power steering going?

A couple weeks ago, I started noticing a groan coming from under the
hood when turning the steering wheel.  It seems to be worse upon
starting the car after it's been sitting overnight.  It lessens or
completely goes away after I've been driving for awhile.  Checked the
power steering fluid, and it's full.  Any ideas as to what could be
wrong?
