HELP, E24 FUEL PROBLEMS

Hello,
I've run into major (I mean big) problems with my fuel system. I was driving
along all perfectly happy in my 635 and all the sudden the car bucked, and
the "Check Engine" light flashed with the buck. I thought it was a freak
occurance, saw I was a little less that a quarter of a tank on gas, so I
filled it up. Upon further driving the car bucked more and more frequently,
in the same way. The problem progressively got worse. So I started
contemplating the facts. Here's what I came up with.

- -- Fuel Problem, or an elec. problem causing a lack of fuel
- -- Got worse with Temp.
- -- Frustration

SO... here's what I did... essentially. I replaced the Fuel filter (hadn't
been replaced in 80k, so...) Removed the pump and applied 12v, it seemed to
work great.

The thing I haven't done yet is check the pump IN the tank (if there is one).
 Here are a couple theories....

- -- The pump(s), are NOT or INTERMITANTLY recieving 12v's at the appropriate
time.
- -- The pump (in the tank) is not working, and the transfer pump can pump when
it is cold, but when it's hot, can't quite push the vapors out, etc. etc.

I'm essentially just gathering info, I do have a microfiche shop manual that
I will look at, and if anyone has had this prob, PLEASE help... TIA, etc.
etc.
