E28 rear deck speakers

Wondering if anyone here has any recommendations on rear deck speakers
for my 535is.  The mounting enclosure holds components; a 5 1/4" woofer
and seperate tweeter.  ive just tried a set of JBL "gto series"...the
woofers dropped right into the 5 1/8" speaker outer diameter hole, but
i was really disappointed with the sound.  id be willing to do some
modifications for a good system.  i recall pricing the bmw replacements
some time ago and laughing at the high price, but im not laughing now
cos they sound a lot better than the jbl's.  any experience you could
share would be most appreciated.  thank you.  kurt.
