hesitation post wash

okay, i washed the engine, started, let run for 25 minutes (sounded
fine) then shut off.

today, i started car, again it idled fine, but upon attempting to drive
down the road the car under throttle would hesitate.

parked, depressed throttle at what would normally be 2500rpm, needle
and engine bounces from idle to maybe 1500, up and down, up and down.

so i removed the plug wires, checked connections, looked fine, but
after restarting, same symptoms.

what is the problem, what do i do?
