733i Sunroof problems

I am new to the Digest and saw the great exchange of problems and 
solutions.  So, I have an immaculate '84 733I with only one problem, the 
sunroof.  The back of it will pop up just fine.  But when I want to 
completely open the unit,  the back will drop and then I hear what sounds 
like a cog jumping a tooth. Bad tooth, stuck cable, dirty track?  Ideas? 
 Anyone have a diagram or where I can get one of how the internals look and 
work.  With the onset of real hot weather here in HoustonTexas, I'm a 
little skeptical of taking it apart leaving a big hole for A/C loss for a 
few days. TIA
