  Don't rule out a 7 series for this time period.   They are not much
different in cost compared to a 5er and for most of the '80's had a
more sosphicated suspension. 


  It is a matter of taste, but I've found the 7ers in the '80s to have
much warmer and appealing interior and exterior designs.   The 7er
lines are smooth and flowing while the 5er is angular and sharp.

  The 535i and 735i have the same engine.   A downside is that it will
be more difficult to find a 7er with 5sp manual, but they do exist.
