M40 hot soke rythmic misfire/cutout ?

Its a 318i touring with 120,000 miles on the clock. New battery last year.

After it is warmed up and shut off (just 1 min !) when I fire it up again the
motor seems to hunt. Close inspection of the fuel consumtion meter shows that
it flicks across to the infinate MPG end as the engine faulters (fuel supply
dying ?). This happens momentarily and returns as the engine picks up again.
The indicator does not get as far as the true zero reading before the engine
momentarily cuts again. The temp gauge kicks at the same time just like a
transient power interupt.

This ONLY happens if the accellerator peddle is left alone i.e. at DME
controlled idle. Depressing the gas peddle guns the engine normaly. All
settles out ok after about 20/30 seconds.

It means that the motor is prone to dying imeediatly after hot start if any exra
load shuch a power steering in applyed just after hot soke start up.

Ideas, help or just plain ecouragment please.

Garry
