325e battery location

I recently acquired an 88 325e, Canadian edition (kilometres instead of 
miles). The battery is in the truck, right side. In my 84 318i the battery
was in the engine compartment, right side rear. In the 325e there's a
battery-sized space where the 318's battery was? I wondered if someone
maybe moved it, but a friends' 86 325e's battery is also in the trunk.

Just curious. What's the space in the engine compartment of my 325 for?
Hmmm, a spare..?
