Temperature Problem in '92 325i

I've got a temperature problem in my '92 325i, there is no heat ane
every once in a while the temperature guage would jump to show that the
car is overheating.  A friend of mine told me it's the thermostat that
needs to be replaced, I'm just wondering how difficult is this to do?
and if it is very difficult, how much does the BMW dealership usually
charge to do this?   Hopefully it's something that's somewhat simple
that I can do myself?  thanks for the help.
