Re E36 Yellow gunk inside oil cap

Your dealer's techs are very likely correct. Your 5 mile commute
may get your water temperature up, but it does not get
your oil hot. You need hot oil to drive the moisture out.
The moisture is a combustion by-product. It mostly gets
into the oil via blowby, the flow of a small amount
of combustion gas past the piston rings. Even new
engines have some blowby.

Drive more. That's why you bought the car!

Subject: 328i E36 Yellow gunk inside oil cap

I checked the oil on my 1997 328i and saw I needed to add some oil. When
I removed the filler cap I saw yellow sticky gunk and some water
condensate inside the cap. . . . They think it is exhaust condensate tha=
t
is not leaving the
engine because I do not drive far enough. My commute to work is about 5
miles of 30-40 mph.
