E-36 LIGHT SWITCH REMOVAL?

The headlight switch itself (not the triangular panel in which it is
mounted) in my 97 M3 E-36 has a rattle.  Does anyone know how to remove the
switch from the triangular panel so I can replace it with another one (which
is currently on order).  I'm assuming the knob pulls off (?) and the shaft
is held on with a retaining nut.  How do I get the knob off without marring
the control panel?  I've tugged straight back, but the control knob doesn't
seem to budge.  Thanks in advance, Matthew.
