The mobile tradition CD-rom is real helpful on this.

Given the last 78 digits of your VIN it returns:
    Series: 3'E30/Z1
    Model: 325i USA,=20
    Year/Month: 87/03
    Gears: 5
    Doors: 2
    Steering: L

So it appears that your car is an '87, and not a european model. And I =
even looked it up on a european CD ...
