How to fix windshield wiper chatter

The driver's side wiper on my '89 325is is chattering like hell, and has
left behind rubber streaks on my windshield.  How do I stop it?  I changed
the wiper blade recently, but it still does it.  I think that the wiper arm
is applying too much pressure to the blade, causing it to lie at an angle
as opposed to contacting the window squarely.  The passenger side is just
fine.  Any hints are appreciated.
