Bad Gas Tank Sending Unit?

On my wife's 95 (E36) 325is, even after filling, the gas gauge reads
constant empty, the yellow Reserve Light is on permanently, and the OBC
Range reads "---". I suspect a bad gas tank sending unit -- any other
thoughts? If its the sending unit, how difficult is the fix, and how is it
done -- must I pull and drain the gas tank, where is the sending unit
accessed, etc.? Thanks for any and all help.
