Muffler repair

The muffler is shot (rusted out) at the union with the pipe toward the 
manifold (is this called the intermediate pipe?). Until I get my act 
together to install a new muffler (probably in the spring), I was 
wondering if there is a quick patch solution to this leak.

I have thought it soaking the union with liquid metal, a glue like 
substance I bought at the auto parts store?
