Jeff,
I have an E36 ///M3 lever in my '85 325e. It is definately shorter
than the stock lever (but I don't have measurements to back that up,
oh well...). If I recall, it's about a $40 part.
Regarding the sloppiness, you might want to check out
www.shortshifter.com for solutions to beef up the shift console mounts.
One warning about the (unbent) ///M3 lever: it changes the position
of the shift lever forward and to the right. I've gotten used to it...
