<E36 325> Top end rattle sometimes

I have an E36 325 (single Vanos) which sometimes gives a horrible rattle
from the hydaulic valve gear on start up from cold. The rattle lasts for
about 3 secs at most. (but it still sonds HORRIBLE!)

It does not seems to be dependant upon neither the ambient temp, nor how
long the car has been standing. It is almost as if it depends on where the
valve gear is when it stops, and then something is in the right position for
the top end to drain down.

Any ideas folks?
