e 28 fuel gauge problem

I have an 85 535i with an erratic fuel gauge. It acts like this: The
gauge reads properly from when the tank is full until when it is about
1/3 full, then the gauge flops from 1/3 to empty and back a number of
times, and then settles on empty.
The little yellow light hasn't come on since I've experienced this
problem--I'm affraid to let the gas get too low. Anyone out there have
any ideas? I'm inclined to believe its the sending unit in the tank. Any
advice is appreciated. TIA Wes Cullen.
