RE: 325i (E30) Ticking When cold

Hey,

I too have a cold startup exhaust leak - from
the exhaust manifold/flange joint. It is
probably a crack in the pipe where the flange
is welded to the downpipe going to the catalytic
converter.

This failure, I believe, is a byproduct of the
exhaust bracket being missing near the cat which
connects to the transmission. The extra movement
stresses the flange weld, and it cracks. I had
a '80 528i drop its entire exhaust front end b/c
of this failure.
