Jason -
I use Chevron 92 octane in my '95 525i. I've not experienced any of your=
reported problems. My wife used regular grade gasoline in her Honda for
the first year (they said it would be happy on regular) and complained
about its performance and unhappy engine noise. She switched to Chevron =
92
octane and the problem went away.
I do not know whether or not BP gasoline is of higher octane than Chevron=
,
but my experience suggests that if your car is stock and has no
tune-up-type problems it should run fine on Chevron 92 octane. (I'm not =
at
all surprised that it does not like 89 octane.)
You should have the car checked - especially given the odor.

Subject: Question about gas and performance
I own a 94 325i and have noticed that the brand of gas that I use
greatly affects the performance of the car. For example, if I fill up
with Chevron 89 or 92 octane, I notice a big decrease in performance,
