Re: "Factory demos"

I am in the market for a new or very lightly used 528i , my beloved '85 535i
having reached the "point of no return" where the work required is more than
the car is worth, at least to me.

Recently, I visited my local stealer... I mean dealer, and I saw on the lot a
car that the salesman called a "brass" car. This did not refer to the color,
but rather the fact that (according to the salesman) this car had belonged to
BMWUSA for executive use and, after having been driven 8k miles, was consigned
to the dealer for resale. Does such a program exist or are these cars really
lemons or something? The dealer wanted $38,800 for a 98 528i auto (6/98
build) that had an original sticker of over $45K due to options. The car
seemed to be in "like new" condition. Would anyone care to comment on whether
this is a good value?

BTW, one of the options was the upgraded sound system, which I recall stickers
around $1200, but does not include a CD player. What do you get with this
option and is it remotely worth the money?

Regarding the recent 528 vs. 328 debate on the digest, I have to come down on
the 528 side. It seems to me to be a lot more car for a little more money. In
the end though, I guess it depends on whether you value speed over space or
vice versa.

Is anyone on the digest interested in my '85 535i? White, 140k miles,
automatic, TRX tires (2 good, 2 so-so), questionable head gasket. The car is
rust free and in average condition. Philadelphia area.
