Yes you can put bigger wheels on the car. The correct tiresize for 15" wheels 
is either 195/60?? 15 or 205/55??15 (or possibly 225/50??15, this will be 
tight).  The correct size for a 16" tire is 205/50??16 (or again possbly 
225/45??16).  No Modifications necessary.  Most importantly you need to have 
the right offset.  Could someone please post to the digest the correct 15" and 
16" offsets for E30s?  My recollection is that 15" wheels need a 25mm offset 
and 16" wheels need a 20mm offset, but I'm not sure.
