head-gasket

I have had a similar problem with my 89 535 for about 7 months now. There's a
slow leak in the gasket, and I have to top off the coolant periodically.
There's a risk of a bigger leak developing due to the pressure, possibly with
catastrophic consequences, but it's largely been a short-haul car.

A fairly honest shop gave me the following estimate, which includes work tha
should be done when the top o' the engine is off: Remove carbon, check
surfaces for warpage, adjust valves. Parts: 14 head bolts: $50; gasket set
$162; labor (8 hrs.) $440. Total $700.

Good luck
