Crazy E30 Antenna Idea

Just wondering if ANYONE has done this.  Having complete disassambled and
re assembled the antenna, and it still doesn't go up or down (but it's suck
in the up position now), and being too cheap to buy a new one, i got to
wondering, has anyone taken the antenna off, and mounted it in the trunk
fully extended, and if so how's the reception.  I'm in the LA area, so
signals are decent.

Flame with with ideas on that one.
