<tii + some E24> front spindle thread repair tip

Not of much general usefulness, but if you ever approach this particular
subject, it's a spot on tip.
Those of us who work on older BMWs with 'cone & cup' front wheel bearings are
familiar with the basic drill. BMW uses a fairly fine spindle thread that
allows for precise adjustments. There's a castle nut to adjust the set, and
it gets secured with a cotter pin. Sometimes we get in there after a hack
mechanic with a blunt instrument has previously bunged up the spindle threads
while removing or resetting that cotter pin. The spindle is much harder than
the nut, and the nut gets 'screwed up' passing over the damage next time it is
removed. The nut is now junk, and unless you fix the thread damage, the new
replacement nut will get ruined as well.

So what are the threads on the tii front spindle? [found the same size on the
1981 635csi, probably others too, but not the regular 02]

It's _not_ metric [remember that the castle nut fit a standard 15/16" socket]

You will need to carefully chase the threads with a 5/8" x 27 tpi die.

enjoy yer holidays!
