Re: bmw-digest V9 #740

hello,
i'm new to the list...
i have just purchaed a 1985 320 i euro version[greymarket],

it has the 2 liter inline six, 5 speed, belonged to a younger man 23, he
brought it to me to fix and i ended up buying it from him, as he did not
have the time to fix it... or the funds to do it right...he had started
pulling head and got scared

the car is low mileage 81 k on the odometer, and is in great shape,
inside and out...clean other than the smashed fender

it will require a new front passenger side fender as it smashed in a way
that it would not justify the time..and then would have polyester ...i
prefer it over bondo...

the reason he sold it was he thought the air mass sensor on the
L-jetronic was bad, spayed carb cleaner down the intake and the red tube
sucked into the intake causing the engine to rev to the limit of the rev
limiter...

after he got it shut down, he restarted ..it idled fine and then
started,
making a ticking noise in the valve train...got louder , he shut it
down...

having pulled the head i noticed some depressions on the exhaust side of
the pistons, where the exhaust valves had "kissed" the piston
tops...after removing the carbon, i saw no dents in the alloy of the
piston tops.

I plan on testing to see if the exhaust valves are leaking, they seem
fine, as do the seats, and all have the same exhaust clearance...

my question is, if any of you have ever experienced anything similar,if
it was not the valves kissing the pistons, i fear maybe a spun rod or
main bearing...

any suggestions??? and i need a manual for this 2 liter engine , know
of a source????

i want to keep this car, as it is clean and will be a blast to fly
around in in the country where i live

my last bmw was a 72 3.0 bavaria, and have missed the "being at one" with
a car ever since, the closest thing is a jag, i have several and havea
76 alfa spyder ....., i do have two vintage bmw bikes..

if you can suggest something i would appreciate it.

may all enjoy health, happiness with, prosperity,in the coming years

sincerely,
richard, a scot in exile in texas
