Think this could also be your alternator bearings.

Have experienced both these symptoms when cold in an
'83 533i.   

Starter motor run-on generally sounds less like a screech, and more like
grinding.  Couldn't be good for the flywheen teeth, so this got changed
pretty quick.

The alternator bearings are another story.  This really does seem to only
occur when it's cold (30-40 degrees F).   After a short time, it just goes
away.  Ultimately wound up changing this, too.

Sure are great cars when they're running OK, though.
