E34 exhaust options (& why does Dinan S*ck ?)

Gentle readers,
Eventually (like now) I'm going to need to change out my "cat back" exhaust
in my 89 535i/5sp  and I'm looking for suggestions.  My only experience with
aftermarket exhaust is the cat back borla that we had in our 88
535is................
The borla was very tough sounding, perhaps a little too 'boy racer' for the
more sophisticated e34.....
I was considering Dinan........my Dinan sport suspension is very
pleasing.......however there seems to be a little bit of Dinan bashing going
on here.
So two questions- which exhaust provides the most value/power/longevity,
with a throaty but subtle sound (I just want it all !!) and what the heck is
up with Dinan ?  Good or bad ??
