<E28> M535i euro lighting problems

Lurker requires expert advice please !
I have a euro M535i, 1986 auto (sorry !) and wish to see more when
driving at night.
Normal dipped headlamps, or even head + fog lamps are not enough.
I wish to change the bulbs to brighter ones, but cannot find on the FAQ
any suggestions.
Does anyone know what type of bulb I could replace these OEM ones with
and where I could get them? Will my wiring cope with brighter bulbs and
more wattage ? I am not fussed if they are blue, yellow or purple with
pink spots and I do not want to get into that discussion. Am looking for
a cheap quick fix.
	
Have already been to BMW spares but they suggested I do not change them.
Sorry if this has already been discussed, but have been late in catching
up with recent digests.

Am living in Frankfurt, home of the mad German drivers.
