CD Changer Problems

This may/may not be entirely bmw related but here goes...

86 325es, stock am/fm tape player.
Works great when on radio and tape.
but if i switch it to 89.3 fm to listen to the cd changer it would have a lot
of static.  if i turn the nob to turn it up (it also comes out rather quiet)
it pops and crackles badly.
Recently i found out that 89.3 and 93.5 stations work, 93.5 sounding a bit
better, louder, but it would zone out into a chiniese station every now and
then.
today, the reception was terrible, it turned out that all of the sudden the
new stations ere 89.1 and 93.3  WHY?!?!?!?!?!
The changer came installed in the car when i bought it so I have no idea of
how it's hooked up or anything but i have seen a little metal audiovox box
under the glove box/dash that has wires going from antenna and receiver.
everything looks like it's plugged in there correctly.
Any ideas?
